Alonissos is proper for fishing and speargun fishing, diving and long promenades. A very nice course is from Patitiri to Megalos Mourtias. The distance is about 2 km and you will be impressed by the wild scenery and the dense vegetation. For those who fancy hiking there is a footpath (4 km) leading from Patitiri to Palia Chora. The area is designated as National Marine Park, the biggest in the Mediterranean, shelter for the monk seal Monachus -Monachus. The park offers guided tours, always abiding by the strict rules that are imposed. The aim of the Marine Park is not only the protection of the famous Mediterranean seal, but also the protection of the rich marine ecosystem of the area. Furthermore, there is a care centre for the Mediterranean seal and a research station.
There are daily organized tours to the neighbouring islets: Peristera, with the numerous ancient shipwrecks; Scantzoura with the abandoned monastery; Gioura with the famous Cyclops’s cave; also in areas of the Marine Park where access is allowed to tourists. On Alonissos, on August 15th, it is worthy of attending the revival of a traditional wedding.
Moreover, at the end of July a piscatorial night is organized with grilled anchovies and much free wine. You should take a walk to the pinewood and enjoy the beautiful scenery and the scents of nature. Walk on the cobblestone pavements and gaze the old windmills and the threshing floors. Visit the churches of Christ, Agios Athanasios, Agios George, the monastery of Analipsi, the Byzantine monastery of Agioi Anargyroi, the Medieval Wall and Kokkinokastro. At the peninsula of Kokkinokastro you may see findings from the ancient city Ikos. Finally, visit the Pirate Museum and tour every part of the island.
